Hi! I’m Steph, the founder of GILL+JILL.
The GILL+JILL brand was created to honor those I love and those I’ve lost, including my mother Gillian, the ‘Gill’ in GILL+JILL.
The messages included with each and every one of our products are carefully written, drawing on my personal experiences of grief, helping you support your loved ones, when they need it the most.

WORDS WITH MEANING
A platitude is a phrase that loses its meaning because it has been said so many times and without thought. Platitudes and toxic positivity can cause more harm than good during difficult moments.
Something that those who have experienced grief commonly bond over is the infuriating and hurtful platitudes they hear when those around them are trying to comfort them. "They're in a better place", "Be grateful that you got the time that you did", "There is a reason for everything". I have both heard these words and said these phrases, because it is hard to know the perfect words to say to comfort someone at such a difficult time. The truth is, there are no perfect words, but there are ways to avoid hurtful ones. Our messages are devoid of platitudes, toxic positivity and religion, but are genuine and comforting, written by those who have experienced grief, and reviewed and loved by professionals in mental health.
MINDFULLY DESIGNED SCENTS
Brain scans show that odors bring on strong memories because of the brain regions that process them. The group of brain areas that are best known for processing emotions, learning, and memory also process odors. (Frontiers for Young Minds)
When my mother passed away, I was gifted a set of bath salts, with a very strong, common scent. The entire bottle fell over and spilled into the bathtub and the scent was so overwhelming that to years later I am unable to smell the same scent without a strong, negative emotional reaction. I purposely designed GILL+JILL candles to have a subtle, comforting scent that should not be commonly smelled in the future and should not invoke negative associations. The scent has additionally received glowing reviews from pregnant and new mothers and those who suffer from headaches.
